自动链排炉炉排的外形类似皮带运输机。煤由上煤机送进煤斗，再从煤斗内依靠自重落到炉排上，随炉排自前后缓慢移动。煤闸板的高度可以调节，以控制煤层的厚度。空气从炉排下面送入，于煤层运动方向相交。煤在炉膛内受到辐射加热，依次完成预热、干燥、着火、燃烧、直至燃尽。灰渣则随炉排移动到后部，经过挡渣板（俗称老鹰铁）落入后部灰渣斗由刮板出渣机排除。

链排炉的种类很多，按其结构形式一般可分为链带式、横梁式、鳞片式、倾斜式和往复式等；其中，链条式炉排和横梁式炉排因其结构的优越性、使用寿命长和操作的高机械化等特点，被广泛应用于煤泥、煤炭烘干领域，并取得良好的烘干效果。
